Autumn: Yoga & Ayurveda practices to stay steady in times of change

As autumn approaches it brings with it not only cooler temperatures and shorter days, but after the heat of summer also a dry, lightness, best visualised in leaves falling from trees as nature’s cycle reaches completion. We are also affected by the very same elements and combined with the back-to-school vibes, these shifting sensations can leave us feeling ungrounded and perhaps dealing with imbalances like anxiety, insomnia, difficult elimination and lower back pain. In Ayurveda, all of these are associated with autumn’s dominant Vata dosha.

This workshop’s two grounding yoga practices weaved with Ayurvedic wisdom will aim to help alleviate these types of imbalances, to stay steady and radiant in the face of change or uncertainty, as well as encouraging us to slow down, reflect and nourish ourselves as we head towards the winter. The workshop will end with a warming lunch based on Ayurvedic principles.

In this series of seasonal workshops with Kate Smith Jamison (www.theyogaandayurvedaclinic.com) delve into the ancient practice of Ayurveda, the holistic healing science for the body – sister to Yoga’s healing science for the mind. Meaning science (Veda) of life (Ayur) Ayurveda takes a personalised, preventative approach to optimal health and longevity in harmony with nature’s pulse.

Chocolate Shamanic Yoga with Helena Lavery
A Journey Beyond the Senses

Saturday 29 June

2-5pm

Flow Studio

52a Hill Street

Our first perception of life begins in the womb (from as early as 8 weeks), with the development of the sense of touch. The senses are our link between the outside world and our inside world - our body to the mind. They give form, flavour, sound, scent and contrast - giving perspective. Without them we would have no perspective of who we are, what we are doing and where we are going.

In this workshop we will stimulate the senses one by one using the practice of Pratyahara to go into and beyond the sensory world invoking deeper wisdom and higher state of consciousness through:

Taste - rousing our tastebuds with raw cacao “Love Bombs” (see below*)

Smell - breathing in natural scents and incense

Touch - feeling the external world meet our internal world with an elemental flow practice

Sight - using drishti points to focus our attention to one spot

Sound - ambient vibes and drumming that will draw us into a shamanic journey

*Raw cacao contains Theobromine, which is a naturally occurring compound found in cacao plants and tea leaves. Named after the scientific name of cacao trees, Theobroma Cacao, scientists found it had similar stimulation and heart effects to caffeine. It originated in the tropical rainforests of the Americas in times of the Mayan and Aztec civilizations and was considered a “food of the gods,” “theo” meaning god and “broma” meaning food.

Theobromine primarily functions to improve your circulatory, respiratory, and excretory system. Much like caffeine, theobromine is a diuretic; however it mainly acts as a smooth muscle relaxant and cardiac stimulant.

Precautionary note: Helena will be burning Palo Santo as one of the scents, this could cause respiratory problems if you have breathing issues. Also, some of the cacao bombs may contain nuts. Cacao raises the heart rate by up to 6 to 7 beats per minute and can increase blood flow to the brain by up to 40%, if you are prone to migraines, please consult Helena before booking -helena@flow.yoga

To The Moon & Back

For those who love their practice to the moon and back but want to slow it down a little. This flow is infused with fluidity and movement, without that dramatic fire often associated with Vinyasa flow. Expect the feel-good flow of heart expanders, hip openers and constant movement to wring out anything weighing you down.

Date Night

Let me introduce you to your hot date — your body! This is the perfect class for anyone who is worn down by the self-deprecating talk we often have about our own bodies and image. We’ll start by getting honest — changing the negative dialogue is hard work that can’t be fixed in one yoga class. We’re here to plant the seed and build tools to tend to that idea every day moving forward. We’ll flip the negativity on its head (we’ll throw in a few flips for your body, too) by spending a class romancing and strengthening focused parts of the body. The class will be the perfect blend of challenge, flow and insight, plus ample time spent in deep hip + heart openers, peppered with laughter and unity. We’ll end with a guided body scan meditation to remind you of who you truly are at your core.

Ayurveda Meets Asana

Accelerating the Path to Longevity

How to achieve true wellness is the question of our current era.

Yoga and Ayurveda have the answers.

Proper alignment in our poses (Hatha Yoga) is critical for a safe and effective practice.

Proper alignment with Nature’s Rhythms (Ayurveda) is critical for our overall well-being and ability to grow old gracefully.  When the two are in synch, you become an unstoppable force of nature.

In these two sessions, Ayurveda philosophy will be skillfully woven into a sequence of

flow, breath, mantra and meditation.

Welcome to your best self.

In Ayurveda, the evening is Kapha time when the heavier elements of Water and Earth are most prevalent.

Expect a quieter practice of deep hip openers, forward folds, and twists. We seal in our contemplative practice with pranayama, mantra, and meditation.

Kundalini in Holywood

Kundalini yoga is often referred to as the ‘yoga of awareness’ – it works quickly to give you grace, balance and most of all the ability to remain calm, centred and clear through life’s challenges.

Kundalini yoga's power comes from the “coiled serpent” which is located around the sacrum or “sacred bone” at the base of the spine. This 'coiled serpent' is a metaphor for the enormous reserve of untapped potential within each of us. In this workshop you will use proven kundalini techniques to gradually awaken this benign serpent and safely deploy its amazing beneficial powers, tapping into this potential to achieve health, happiness and harmony in your life. Through various practices including physical postures, meditation and chanting you will enjoy an elevation in consciousness, promotion of physical well-being and an expansion of awareness. This workshop is open to all levels including beginners.

The workshop will end with a gong bath delivered by Alan Shiels.

Joe has been practising yoga in Greater Belfast for 20 years and has a keen interest in wellbeing and spirituality. He is committed to helping people become their best selves. Joe qualified as a hatha yoga teacher in 2005 and as a kundalini yoga teacher in 2009 and has been teaching in Belfast and North Down since 2010.
